Sr. Systems Engineer

Do you love scouring the net for the latest open source packages that make your life easier? Type a few languages fluently? Love spinning disk? Do you live to make it bigger, better, faster?

You are big on automation and custom integration and have a track record to prove it. You are widely considered to be the most senior person in a team of unix system engineers, but are casual and humble. You have diverse experience—you know how to capacity plan an application stack soup to nuts. You know how to evaluate one software solution over the next. You are the ‘go-to person’ for troubleshooting the most complex issue. You breath UNIX, and can articulate technical and soft pros and cons of your favorite OSes.

This is a terrific opportunity to join a team of smack talking engineers that want to dominate our competitors and also build indestructible infrastructure. If building solutions where none exist (or the ones that do, are sub-par), then this is the place for you.

Responsibilities:

You will join a team of really sharp folks that are responsible for designing and implementing the systems infrastructure that powers www.shutterfly.com. The Systems Operations team does it all – from performing forklift database storage upgrades to developing our next generation server build and configuration management environment to designing and implementing single sign-on—the list goes on. You will work on various development projects to automate any and every part of our collective world. One word – “auto-pilot.” There’s also an on- call rotation, because sometimes people are better than silicon.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years paid experience working in a Unix-based production environment (not corporate IT)
  • Advanced kernel, system, application and/or storage performance tuning experience (we will ask)
  • Able to converse in Perl and shell (we will ask); other languages welcome
  • Demonstrated ability to build automated and scalable processes using Perl
  • Lots of open-source experience required; customization against enterprise software a plus
  • Direct experience managing and performing detailed capacity planning for large complex websites
  • Can figure just about anything out under pressure
  • BMC Bladelogic integration experience a big plus
  • Can make any cross functional project succeed with dogged determinism
  • Advanced storage and SAN experience – FC, SCSI, NFS, FCIP
  • A self starter and highly motivated individual is required
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP; leverages networking principles (L2/L3, STP) to solve complicated problems
  • Token list of applications/protocols (or similar) you should have more than a clue about: Apache, Bind, Nagios, Veritas Volume Manager, Tomcat, Cacti, ZFS, Bonnie, iozone, Squid, SMTP, memcached… ok the list goes on, but you get the point
